b'On The Old Show FieldThis is from a postcard in Annie Grays possession of the Bishop Wilton Show. It is difficult to date accurately but it seems to be prewar, probably late 1920s or early 1930s. Such a dating would place it on the Old Show Field. As there is no sign of the Wolds or any village housing in the background, it could be looking West. The only other extant photograph of the Show Field in this location is from 1923 showing the grandstand on the north side of the plot. The Boer WarBased on a photograph supplied by John Ibson.W e reported on a village connection with the Boer War in Bulletin 4. In a press cutting from the Howdenshire Chronicle, Trooper John Clint, son of Thomas Clint, is described as being Back From The Front in South Africa in 1902.In the accompanying photograph, taken in South Africa, James Drury is shown ready for action.James Drury was born c1860 in York. He is listed in the 1891 census for Bishop Wilton aged 31, as a blacksmith, married to Sarah and with 2 children, George aged 8 born in Bishop Wilton, and Annie aged 4 born in Fridaythorpe. Although the photo is undated, he must have been aged approximately 40 or 41. It is possible that it was his skills as a farrier that took him out to the War, given the armys dependency on horses.388 BULLETIN 19'
