b'Account Roll - 1468 to 1469Wendy GildingWithout any doubt the greatest challenge for the Local History Group has been the transcription and translation of old documents from Latin to the extent that we can publish something in these pages. In a few exceptional cases we have found published translations that we have been able to use directly. In other cases we have elicited the support of experts. But expertise in Medieval Latin is in short supply. So as a last resort, with suitable reference material, a DIY approach has been adopted as in the current instance where Wendy Gilding has attempted to make sense of a massive Account Roll 1from the Hull University Archives. One side of the double-sided document is pictured here at the reading room of the Archives in the Brynmor Jones Library. This beautifully written document covers 2 years: January 1468 to December 1469; it is the Account Roll of Robert Hall, Steward of the Prebend of Wilton. Edward IV was on the throne (1461-83), and George Neville was Archbishop of York (1464-76). The various crops and animals are headlined in the marginsows, pigs, piglets, gilts, sheep, hens are all counted, the various cropsbarley, brewing barley, oats, wheat and ryeare recorded in stones and bushels. Income from rent of pasture is listed along with names of the lessees. The manuscript is 2 metres long, a side for either yearyou should be warned that we have photographed and attempted to transcribe less than half, so this may well be continued in our next Bulletin.Tenants of the PrebendOne section of the document details the people who held land in the township of Bishop Wiltonand in neighbouring townshipsremember that the prebendary land at this time included Belthorpe, Bolton, Yapham, Youlthorpe and Gowthorpe.
