b'Old School FindsMike & Kate PrattW ork in 2008 by John Ibson on the floor in the building that used to be the office and shop for W. L. Fishers revealed evidence of a former use. In order to lay a new solid floor, John removed the wooden floor and the joists on which it was laid. Under this, on an earthen surface, he found the objects pictured here: an inkpot; two and a half clay marbles; two stumps of scribers for writing on a slate, themselves made out of slate; a metal fitting that used to have a swivelling arm that possibly held a candle; a stem from a clay pipe; two relatively recent coins. The money must have fallen between the floorboards and the other items date from before the floor was laid. The inkpot, marbles and scribers are fairly good evidence of the buildings former use as a school. We learn from the School Log Book for 10th August 1863 that the floor John Ibson took up wasliberal patron of the School, Sir Tatton Sykes. Some over 140 years old: better desks are needed.
